Brian has been an avid recycler since college and carries that mindset into the design process. If available, reclaimed wood, furniture parts and local supplies are used in preference to imported elements or recently felled trees. This desire to reuse and to use local, especially reclaimed, personalizes the design process further. To add to the uniqueness of a piece, once a project is designed and finished for a client, it will never be replicated for anyone else, at least not by Brian.
Brian Thomsen started Thomsen’s Custom Finish in 2001 as a serious hobby shop restoring old furniture. After learning more about tools and techniques with The Greenville Woodworkers Guild, Brian decided to go into business and make custom designed furniture. The ideas for furniture stem from a wide range of furniture styles studied by Brian throughout the years. The unique styles are often the result of combining old and new techniques, solid wood and veneers, copper and aluminum and bracing the design with a nod towards a certain period.
Brian’s hobby developed from transforming old furniture into new furniture by adding new elements and highlighting existing elements that may have not been apparent on the original. The idea carries forward to new designs which usually take into account the use of rescued wood and elements recovered from dismantled furniture.
